Revolutionary Method for Early Breast Cancer Detection: Developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute

In order to be able to detect breast cancer earlier and better, a new method is to be used in the future. It was developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute, among others.

Researchers at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen/Würenlingen AG and ETH Zurich have developed a method to detect breast cancer earlier and more reliably. Clinical trials are planned at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ) and the Cantonal Hospital Baden (KSB) from 2024. Women – but also doctors – might hope for an improvement in breast cancer screening, writes the PSI in a press release.

A team of researchers from PSI and ETH Zurich has succeeded in further developing the screening method for the early detection of tumors in such a way that it delivers more reliable results and is less uncomfortable for the patient. This might increase the chances of survival for affected women because breast tumors would be detected earlier. “With our work, we have taken an important step on the way there,” says Marco Stampanoni from PSI and ETH. Earlier diagnosis, better therapy In 2020, breast cancer was the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide with over two million cases. In women, it accounts for 24.5 percent of cancer cases and 15.5 percent of cancer-related deaths. In many industrialized countries, mammography screening programs serve as a precautionary instrument. Stampanoni’s working group published several images in the specialist journal Optica to demonstrate the advantages of GI computed tomography. “Our goal is to reduce the dose by a factor of two to three while maintaining the same resolution or to increase the resolution by 18 to 45 percent compared to conventional X-rays,” physicist Michal Rawlik, first author of the publication, is quoted as saying.
