The maker of a flying car has received special airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), one more step towards a future world where flying vehicles circle overhead.
The Californian company Alef Aeronautics is the first to obtain this certification for a flying vehicle, which would also be inspired by the car that Marty McFly uses in the film “Back to the future”. The “Model A” will therefore be the first 100% electric automobile, which can move both on the road and in the sky, to receive an approval from the American government, reported “Global News”.
The vehicle has already proven to be able to drive on the road and be parked like any other car. Tests will be on the program to determine if walking in the sky will remain possible.
“It’s one small step for planes, one giant leap for cars,” said Jim Dukhovny, CEO of Alef Aeronautics, in a press release.
The company says the project idea for the Model A occurred in 2015 – the same year Marty McFly, the film’s main character, traveled “into the future”.
The vehicle is currently able to take off and land vertically. An airstrip, like at an airport, would therefore not be necessary. According to the company, the car will be able to carry one or two passengers and should be able to fly up to 177 km/h.
