An exoskeleton tested at Les Glamots! The follow-up care and rehabilitation center (CSSR) in Roullet-Saint-Estèphe allowed three patients to walk this Friday. Usually the protagonists are in wheelchairs or don’t have the capacity to be able to walk for so long. This little gem, which Pierre Maury, the director, wants to finalize the purchase by the end of the year, would be the very first in a medical center in Poitou-Charentes.

“It’s still in the Robocop spirit”

A patient with Guillain-Barré syndrome had the opportunity to try the exoskeleton. Accustomed to a wheelchair, he rediscovered the feeling of walking for a few minutes. ” At the beginning it was difficult but it is pleasant he explains. However, his disease, which attacks the peripheral nerves, removes certain sensations from him.

At first, Abqari Hassan, was scared, but his face was beaming with smiles and joy following his test with the exoskeleton.

The last test was carried out by Abqari Hassan. He arrived at the rehabilitation center following a CVA (cerebrovascular accident) in April 2023. As a result, the entire right side of his body is paralyzed, from head to toe. ” I had trouble walking with a crutch so I was scared at first he testifies with difficulty. Following his accident, he might no longer speak and he is beginning to express himself with difficulty. ” The very first step was difficult, I felt like someone was taking me away. Then, following three meters, I had the feeling that it was me who was walking. All smiles since this first test, the 59-year-old former industrial designer hopes to be able to repeat the experience.

Christophe Beuste works for Medimex, located in Lyon. He works alongside companies that manufacture exoskeletons such as the American company Ekso, which designed the robot used at Glamots. He describes this robot as a “rehabilitation or assistance tool “. Today, “ it’s still in the Robocop spirit “, he explains ironically. By this he means that there is still a lot of progress to be made to adapt the exoskeleton to all types of profiles and environment and above all, for the user to be able to climb stairs.

A positive momentum for patients

In the case of Abqari Hassan, physiotherapist Pierre May-Carle, expert in the field of exoskeleton, present for the occasion, believes that this process ” will speed up his walking pattern “. Paralyzed on the right side, the robot was configured to accompany the patient’s right leg so that it takes the same step as the left leg. The physiotherapist program the robot depending on the patient’s disease and condition at the time of the test “. An assessment is carried out upstream with the patient to find out if he can use the exoskeleton. Specific training is essential for a doctor to use this new technological device on a patient. “ The benefits of standing, psychologically and emotionally, are positive for the patient », concludes Christophe Beuste.

What price?

Between 100 and 200,000 euros. Here is the range for the acquisition of the exoskeleton tested at the center of Glamots. Since the introduction of the 80 km / h limit on certain departmental roads, wanted by Édouard Philippe, the collection of fines for speeding on these sections benefits medical centers. The total cost of the exoskeleton for the director, Pierre Maury, should be covered two-thirds by these subsidies.
