Revolutionary Design: Unveiling the Interior of the Audi Q6 e-tron

With the Q6 e-tron, Audi is changing the design of its interiors, with in particular a new layout of the screens.

As much to say it right away: we were disappointed when we saw a camouflaged copy of the Q6 e-tron appear during the presentation of Audi at the opening of the Munich Motor Show. We expected to discover the definitive vehicle, without camouflage. The camouflage has been removed only on the inside! We will therefore have to wait for a complete presentation. The brand with the rings wanted to focus on the interior.

If Audi does so, it is to highlight the fact that the Q6 inaugurates a new approach in the design of the manufacturer’s vehicles. The SUV has been designed from the inside out, a reverse logic allowed by the new platform dedicated to electric, the PPE (shared with Porsche which will offer the electric Macan). In particular, it improves the space on board.

For this Q6, Audi wanted to create a cocoon atmosphere, with continuity between the dashboard and the doors, materialized by a band called “Softwrap”. The brand plays on the use of materials to make it a “functional design element”, with differences depending on the area.

Those corresponding to controls “are dressed in a high-quality gloss black to provide the clarity necessary for interaction with the vehicle”. Those that “emphasize comfort are distinguished by their large surfaces and soft materials”. The Softwrap can thus be covered with a recycled fabric (which can also cover the seats).

Above the Softwrap, there is a new set of screens, curved, whose contour evokes that of the Singleframe grille. There’s an 11.9-inch screen for the instrumentation and a 14.5-inch screen for the MMI infotainment. Everything is tactile. The passenger has his own 10.9-inch screen in front of him. He can watch a movie, without the driver being able to see it. A touch-sensitive control panel is present on the driver’s door, with functions for mirrors, seats and lighting. To see if it is practical to use!

The vehicle inaugurates a new electronic architecture, the E3, developed by the software subsidiary of the Volkswagen group, Cariad… and which seems largely responsible for the delay of the model, expected since 2022. If everything works, the Q6 will be hyper connected, with, for example, voice assistance which allows functions to be controlled and learns as it is used to better assist the driver. For example, recurring operating sequences are automated, like air conditioning settings.

The model may have (as an option) an augmented reality head-up display. The information is projected onto an angled image plane through the windshield, giving the impression that it is displayed in front of the vehicle. Ambient lighting contributes to the look, but also to the functions, allowing for example to visualize the dynamic indicators or the level of charge.

Audi announces a 526-litre trunk. The volume can reach 1529 liters by folding the bench seat 40/20/40. Under the front trunk, there is a space of 64 liters.

We will therefore have to wait for another show, perhaps that of Los Angeles in November, to discover the exterior of the Q6 and have the technical details, even if we had had some information during our handling in preview of a prototype.
