Scientists from Britain have concluded that a blood test reveals more than fifty different types of Carcinoid tumors. This promising discovery speeds up the diagnosis of cancer and thus early access to appropriate treatment, according to the British news agency BR Media.

Ongoing research on cancer is mainly focused on early detection of the disease, because the success of tumor treatment depends largely on its discovery in its early stages, and scientists have concluded through a recent study that a blood test can detect more than fifty different types of cancer, and scientists said The blood test showed promising results in a trial involving thousands of patients from the National Health Service in Britain.

The Galleries test, which is currently only available in the United States of America, can determine the source of disease within the body with an accuracy of up to 85%. In the “Simpliify” clinical trial, the test detected signs of cancer in 232 people, out of 6,238 people who visited a general practitioner in England and Wales, because of suspicious symptoms they had.

Of these 323 patients, the researchers said, 244 were subsequently diagnosed with cancer, with a positive predictive accuracy of 75 percent. It was found that about 2% of patients who tested negative had cancer. Overall, the scan correctly detected cancer in 66 percent of the population.

Gallery’s assay works by looking for chemical changes in parts of the genetic code that leak from tumors into the bloodstream. Screening does not detect all types of cancer and does not replace NHS screening programs such as those for breast, cervical and bowel cancer. The accuracy of the examination also depended on the stage of the cancer, ranging from 24% in the very early stage (stage I) of the tumors to 95% for the advanced stage (stage IV).
