This is a revolution in the world of maternity and paternity: birth shelters will become widespread in Brussels hospitals. Currently, there is only one, at the Erasmus Hospital in Anderlecht. It serves as a model for those that follow. Hannah Ducat is a midwife at Cocon, she was the guest on 12:30 p.m. to talk regarding it.
“A birth center, within the hospital itself, which will allow the couple to be followed by midwives throughout the pregnancy, childbirth and part of the post-natal period as well.“, describes Hannah Ducat. In the Cocon, at the Erasmus Hospital, there is no gynecologist for families, except at the time of ultrasounds, in order to experience a natural childbirth.
A “cocoon” is what families come to look for in this birth shelter: “All this family atmosphere with midwives who all work with the same philosophy, the same interest in the patient“, justifies the guest.

The new thing is that these structures will soon become widespread in Brussels hospitals. Hannah Ducat tempers however, the deadline of summer 2024 will not be sufficient to put them in place, but this is provided for by the royal decree: “The opening of technical platforms must take place in each maternity ward. This allows independent midwives to come and perform the births of their patients.“, she reacts.
