Canberra: Magic mushroom and MDMA can now be used to treat mental illness in Australia. Australia is the first country to legalize these addictive drugs for treatment. The new law will come into effect from today. This allows licensed psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and magic mushroom for certain other depressive disorders.

The approval came following trials showed that the use of these addictive drugs changed patients. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) said in a statement that their use as an intoxicant is prohibited and only for medical use.

Doctors point out that the use of these drugs in controlled doses is safe as prescribed by the expert medical team. But experts warn that MDMA use can cause heart disease, memory loss, panic attacks and depression.

Psilocybin, a compound found in magic mushrooms, is used to treat PTSD. Scientists have found that it regulates the activity of the nervous system in the brain.
