An anti-cancer pill that showed exceptional results in laboratory tests has moved on to Phase 1 clinical trials, meaning it will be tested on humans. If the effectiveness shown in animals is confirmed, in which all the examined tumors were blocked and eliminated, we can really face a revolutionary cancer therapy. An American research team was involved in the development and testing of the anti-cancer pill, led by scientists from the City of Hope Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, California, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, who collaborated closely with the Department of Biochemistry at the University of California, Riverside. With colleagues from his department, the Proteome Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (CALTECH), and the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix. The researchers, coordinated by Professor Linda Malkas, a professor in the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapies at City of Hope, have been working on this cancer drug for regarding 20 years. The name of the experimental drug, AOH1996, commemorates the little girl Anna Olivia Healy who died of cancer in 2005 when she was just nine years old. Professor Malkas was deeply touched by the little girl’s story, which encouraged him to participate even more actively in research. Successful preclinical tests have been performed on breast, skin, lung, prostate, brain, cervical and other cancer cells. The animals it was tested on also had significant results. Phase 1 human trials began a few months ago, and the first tests, which are currently aimed at understanding the drug’s dosage and toxicity, will take years before moving on to the stages where actual efficacy must be proven. Technically, it is an anti-cancer pill that targets cancer cells with the help of a protein called PCNA (short for Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen). In this way, it only and exclusively kills cancer cells, interrupting their reproduction cycle. Professor Long Gu, co-author of the study, said: “No one has used PCNA for therapeutic purposes until now because it was considered ‘uncontrollable’, but City of Hope was able to develop an experimental drug. Our anti-cancer pill is like a blizzard that shuts down a key air hub and blocks all boarding and exits just for planes carrying cancer cells”.
