The Dutch company Lightyear can congratulate itself. In six years, she managed to develop from scratch an electric car capable of running on solar energy. And this time it is no longer a prototype: the Lightyear 0 will be on our roads from next November!
The sedan is fitted with 5 square meters of solar panels scattered across its body that allow it to recharge while driving or even just when parked in the sun. What bring him daily up to 70 kilometers of autonomy in the most favorable climates. It would then be potentially possible to drive up to 11,000 km per year without plugging the car in! In cooler climates, the autonomy provided by solar will vary greatly, from around 7 months in Portugal or Spain, to 2 months in the Netherlands according to the manufacturer’s calculations.
560 km autonomy on the highway
These kilometers are added to the autonomy of the battery, announced at 625 km. Thanks to its exemplary aerodynamics, by far the best in its category, the Lightyear 0 is credited with an average consumption of 10.5 kWh/100km. A record! The manufacturer also announces that at 560 km of autonomy on the motorway (at 110 km / h), the environment the least favorable to the consumption of an electric car. Perfect for the holidays!
Avant-garde and exclusive
Production of the Lightyear 0 will begin this fall, with first deliveries expected in November. The car will be voluntarily produced in a limited series of 946 copies billed at €250,000 each! A high price which should allow the new manufacturer to continue the development of its future models, including a compact sold around 30,000 euros expected for 2025.
