Revolution in the Champions League!

2023-07-10 13:53:36

The new formula of the Champions League will launch in 2024 and, during the first round (8 matches for each team), clubs from the same country will be able to compete!

The Champions League might soon offer a Real-Barça Clasico, a Milanese Derby della Madonnina, an OM-PSG Classic or even a Derby of England (this is the nickname of the Manchester United-Liverpool shocks)… Clubs from the same country will indeed be able to face each other in the main round of the Champions League from the 2024-2025 season.

The new C1 formula imagined by UEFA will thus offer a “championship phase” and not a “group phase”, since the 36 qualified (instead of 32) will be brought together in a single table. Each team will have 8 different opponents (with 4 home matches and as many away), following drawing 2 teams from each of the four pots.

Blocking possible

UEFA realized that a blockage was possible during the draw if they kept the restriction of no matches between clubs from the same country. Such a blockage may occur for the teams in pot 1 drawn last. The European body has thus established a new restriction: only one match possible between representatives of the same championship.

For the record, teams from the same nation might not compete since the participation of 2nd in the championship in 1997-1998. Only Liverpool and Chelsea found themselves in the same group in 2005, the Reds then having a special status as defending champions. This restriction is obviously maintained for the play-offs (between the teams ranked 9 to 24) then the round of 16 of the future competition.
