With “Revolt or attempts at failure”, the tightrope walker Johanne Humblet closes a triptych focused on surpassing oneself and the desire to meet. This creation was born in Annecy on the stages of the Bonlieu national stage and will be performed from this Wednesday, October 11.

A 1.2 centimeter wire installed two meters from the ground. This is where the tightrope walker Johanne Humblet will perform for almost an hour, without attachment or safety net, for her show “Revolt or Attempt to Fail”. Third part of a triptych “made in Annecy” imagined by engineers, machinists and by this astonishing tightrope walker, artistic director of the company The Daughters of the Pale Fox.

With her on stage, four other women – two musicians and two circus performers – one of whom moves with her on the wire: There is one who does aerobatics. I take her to places unknown to her, I make her do things she’s never really done, I bring her to the wire with me when she doesn’t do wire. I push the artists, and even the technical team, to go beyond their limits, to go to places of discomfort to do new things, to put themselves in danger, to take risks. For me, you have to take risks to move forward.”

Usually, her credo is aerial crossings without a net 60 meters above the ground, on a wire as thick as the finger of a hand.

“No thread, this is the place where I am good. It is my job. I’m very comfortable on it, I do lots of things. The concentration is there but ultimately, we forget it, it is part of a whole. It’s a dialogue with the playing partners, with the public too. I’m not focused on myself, not at all, that’s not the goal. Every gesture I make is not for technical performance, it is to tell something, it is to give to people and to receive too.”

The artist imagined a triptych, a show in three parts, Resist” (2019), “breathe” (2021) et “Revolt or attempt at failure” (2023) which is playing in theaters.

The artist designed this third part “like an emergency”, that of living and opposing any straitjacket. In this new creation, the Belgian tightrope walker unfolds a tenuous thread between failure and hope, a spectacular game whose price is freedom, she tells us: “This show is regarding the path of revolt and not so much regarding revolt. It’s how we arrive at revolt, how we manage to be with others because together, we are stronger. How we manage to meet each other , to help each other, to help each other, then leave once more to finally end up towards a collective ascension and open doors to something else and make a collective revolt.”

“During the big crossings, the public tells me that their hands are sweaty, that they hold their breath for an hour, that they are tense, but because I play with that too; surpassing oneself, going beyond limits, playing with risk-taking. What we’re doing is strong, it’s crazy. There, it’s three years of creation, but it’s worked on and we play with it so it’s sure that the public is kept in breath”concludes the artist.

Johanne Humblet’s show can be seen in preview in Annecy from October 11 to 14 on the Bonlieu national stage.
