From Race Track to Road: The Lynx GT1

While the 2005 Ford GT was never originally designed for racing, matech Competition transformed it into a formidable contender for the FIA GT1 World Championship. Although the Ford GT “didn’t produce any memorable results during that time,” Lynx Motors sees the potential to create an “impressive road car” by carrying over the race car’s “widened carbon-fiber bodywork and aerodynamic elements.”

  • Transmission: The enhanced engine will be paired with a Ricardo 6-speed manual transmission.
  • Original Racing Engines: Adding to the exclusivity, three of the original twin-turbo 7.0-liter V-8 racing engines, producing “1,400-1,500 hp,” are available with a Sadev 6-speed sequential gearbox.
  • Chassis: Each vehicle will use a Ford GT chassis originally intended for Matech’s race cars, distinct from the standard production run.

Lynx Motors GT1: Reviving a Racing Legend for the road – An Interview

The lynx Motors GT1 project has captured the attention of automotive enthusiasts worldwide. We sat down with Ethan Sterling, Head of Bespoke Customization at Lynx Motors, to delve deeper into this exciting project that transforms the Ford GT into a road-legal GT1 race car.

The Genesis of the Lynx GT1

Archyde: Ethan, thank you for joining us. Let’s start with the big picture. What inspired Lynx Motors to undertake this aspiring project of reviving the Ford GT1 race car for the road?

Ethan Sterling: Thanks for having me. It really boils down to passion. The FIA GT1 era was something truly special, and the Matech Competition Ford GT, while not racking up major wins, possessed incredible potential and raw beauty. We saw an possibility to unlock that potential, creating an “impressive road car” using the race car’s design and performance DNA, making it available to car collectors.

Unleashing Power and Performance

Archyde: Let’s talk about power. The numbers being thrown around are astounding – 1,200+ horsepower from the enhanced 5.4-liter V-8, and even options for the original racing engines pushing 1,400-1,500 hp. Can you elaborate on the engine choices and what buyers can expect?

Ethan Sterling: Absolutely. Every Lynx GT1 is powered by a heavily modified version of the Ford GT’s supercharged 5.4-liter V-8, pushing well beyond its original capabilities. For the truly discerning customer,we offer a very limited number of cars with original twin-turbo 7.0-liter V-8 racing engines. These are incredibly rare and deliver mind-blowing performance. Think about classic racing but combined with modern amenities.

Bespoke Customization: A “One of One” Experience

Archyde: The level of customization you’re offering sounds unparalleled. How involved can buyers get in shaping their dream GT1?

Ethan sterling: Extremely involved! Each of the 28 cars will be “one of one” in how it’s specced. We work closely with each client to bring their vision to life. From selecting Recaro, Sparco, or Manthey seats with three- or five-point harnesses, to choosing interior colors, bespoke gauges, and trim, the possibilities are nearly endless. The goal is to create a car that is truly an extension of the owner’s personality and taste.

Balancing Racing Heritage and Road comfort

Archyde: Maintaining the FIA GT1 spirit while ensuring road usability must be a challenge. How do you balance those two aspects?

Ethan Sterling: That’s the tightrope walk. We retain the core elements of the GT1 race car – the aggressive carbon-fiber bodywork, the enhanced aerodynamic elements, its racing-inspired lines to the modern interpretation. At the same time, we’ve incorporated modern conveniences like a phone charging pad and Apple CarPlay integration to make the car enjoyable on the road, something that a true race car simply would not. Road comfort is key.

The Future of Automotive Exclusivity

Archyde: With only 28 examples planned, the Lynx GT1 is undeniably exclusive.Where do you see projects like this fitting into the future of high-end automotive collecting?

Ethan Sterling: I think we’re seeing a growing demand for bespoke, limited-production vehicles that offer a unique driving experience and a connection to automotive history. The Lynx GT1 embodies that, offering collectors something truly special and one of a kind. These custom cars really stand out!
