The Resurgence of the Gilles d’Havré: Bringing Back the Folklore, One Spaghetti Dinner at a Time
Ah, the once-glorious company of Gilles d’Havré—dissolved due to, let’s just say, “internal complications.” You know how it is: one gille thinks they’re the king of the carnival while another thinks they’re just too good for their oversized feathered hat. And what happened in the end? Not much, really—just a few Gilles left dangling. Poor blokes! They probably have a support group now. “Hi, I’m Gille, and I’m a former member of a company that no longer exists.” Talk about a midlife crisis!
But hold your horses! This isn’t just a tale of despair. A phoenix rises! After twenty years of slumber, the Ghlin carnival is kicking up its heels and ready to rock the casbah! It’s practically an Adam Sandler movie waiting to happen—it’s got nostalgia, it’s got costumes, and if we’re lucky, some questionable dance moves. What’s next? A 90s reunion tour with all the local band rejects?
One former Gille, who, to be honest, sounds like a folklore scholar on the brink of losing his marbles, passionately states, “When you are Gille, you have that in your blood.” Right, mate? I suppose we can’t just wash this kind of culture out at the laundromat. It’s akin to saying that if you’re British, you have tea in your veins—though, let’s be real, the real blood is probably Earl Grey!
Finances: The Real Party Pooper
Let’s talk finances before we grab our glitzy costumes and get ready to cha-cha. The organizers are understandably keen on financial backing for their revival—the old spaghetti dinner and 80s evening routine are back in vogue! Nothing says “cultural rebirth” quite like asking people to pay for their own pasta while enjoying a trip down memory lane with a focused (read: horrendous) dance-off to Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.”
But why, you may ask? Well, costs have a funny way of piling up. Costumes, music, and drumming—oh my! Can’t forget about those lavish musical notes that don’t come cheap! Our hopeful gilles are aiming to spread the costs over more bodies: “If it requires too much investment, people will be demotivated.” It’s almost like trying to convince your friend to buy the latest gaming console. “Just think of it as a shared experience, alright?”
Women Supporters: The Unsung Heroes
And let’s not forget about the women! As the unsung heroes of many a carnival, they’re ready to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Gilles. “We want to include them. We don’t yet know how they will be dressed, but they will live the folklore to the fullest, like us.” Ah yes, inclusivity at its finest, though personally, I think the men should be the ones to figure out the outfits. More sequins, less muffin tops, gents!
It Takes a Family
Leading the charge is Emmanuel Daniels, born into Gilles royalty, flanked by familial backup with his dad serving as vice president—oh, the drama of family politics at the carnival! Picture it: sibling rivalry played out on the festival grounds. “No, I really should be the one to wear the feathered hat because I’m the oldest!”
While the city of Mons is still warming up to the idea of reviving the Gilles d’Havré, they’ll be making their grand entrance come August 2025! Fingers crossed, because what’s a summer without some eccentric costumes, rhythmic drumming, and everyone pretending they can dance? So, let’s rally behind our Gilles and support this uproarious return of tradition. Who knows? We might just get a taste of authentic culture—or at the very least, a ridiculously good time fueled by spaghetti and questionable 80s karaoke!

Dissolved due to internal conflicts, the once-prominent company of Gilles d’Havré ultimately dwindled down to just a handful of passionate members. “For my part, I sought continuity in a company based in Bracquegnies. Being a Gille is an inherent part of my identity; to be deprived of this vibrant folklore is simply unthinkable. My involvement never waned, but it’s a different experience than actively participating as a Gille in your own village’s society.” Meanwhile, the city of Mons has yet to officially recognize the legacy of Gilles d’Havré.
Disappeared more than 20 years ago, the Ghlin carnival has been revived!
“We should receive a little financial help for our launch and we know that we can rely on the non-profit organization Le Grand 15 for support. Subsequently, we plan to host two fundraising events— a spaghetti dinner and an ’80s evening— to contribute to our funds, ensuring that participation costs remain affordable for attendees.”
As members grapple with covering the costs of their costumes— which are more economical if purchased in August during the off-season— they must also budget for essential music and drum expenses. “This is why attracting additional members is crucial; it helps distribute costs among more individuals. Maintaining the carnival’s vibrancy is vital, and excessive financial demands could lead to decreased enthusiasm among participants.”
The air is thick with excitement as organizers emphasize that motivation levels remain high. “Once we receive the city’s approval, we will distribute boxes to announce our (re)birth in Havré. We are eager for the community to join us in August 2025 to show their support.” In this endeavor, the Gilles can count on the unwavering support of their female counterparts, who are determined to be actively involved. “We aim to embrace their participation fully, though we are still finalizing their attire, but they will experience the folklore alongside us, immersed in the cultural tapestry of our celebrations.”
Emmanuel Daniels, born into a family steeped in Gille traditions, is excited to draw on support from his father— who serves as the vice-president of the organization— and his two brothers, all committed to making this revived carnival a memorable cornerstone of the summer festivities.
How is Emmanuel Daniels ensuring women’s participation in the Gilles d’Havré Carnival festivities?
**Interview with Emmanuel Daniels: Reviving the Gilles d’Havré Carnival**
**Editor**: We’re here today with Emmanuel Daniels, a key figure in the resurgence of the Gilles d’Havré and a passionate advocate for folkloric traditions. Emmanuel, thank you for joining us!
**Emmanuel Daniels**: Thanks for having me! It’s an exciting time for us.
**Editor**: The Gilles d’Havré have been dormant for over two decades. What motivated this revival now?
**Emmanuel Daniels**: It’s hard to describe the feeling, but being a Gille is in my blood—I’ve grown up with this culture and the carnival spirit. After so many years, it felt wrong to let that heritage fade away. The Ghlin carnival is a way for us to reconnect, share our history, and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun together.
**Editor**: There have been mentions of financial challenges in bringing this carnival back to life. Can you share more about that?
**Emmanuel Daniels**: Absolutely. It’s essential that we approach this revival sustainably. We plan to host events like spaghetti dinners and 80s themed nights to raise funds. They’re not just about the food—they also generate excitement and nostalgia, and most importantly, spread the financial burden. The last thing we want is for people to feel demotivated due to costs.
**Editor**: You also mentioned the inclusion of women in the festivities. Why is this important to you?
**Emmanuel Daniels**: Women are the unsung heroes of our folklore. Their roles in the celebrations are vital, and we want to make sure they’re represented fully. We’re still figuring out details on their costumes, but I guarantee we’ll make it vibrant. We’re all in this together, and it’s time we reflect that!
**Editor**: How do you envision the dynamic between family involvement and carnival activities, specifically your own family’s role?
**Emmanuel Daniels**: (laughs) My family dynamic is like a classic carnival storyline! My dad is the vice president, and while there’s plenty of joking and sibling rivalry, we all share a deep love for this tradition. We’ll support one another, and certainly keep the feathered hat conversations spirited.
**Editor**: Lastly, what’s your message to the residents of Mons as you prepare for the Ghlin carnival’s return in August 2025?
**Emmanuel Daniels**: Join us in embracing this chance to celebrate our culture! We promise an event filled with colorful costumes, charming chaos, rhythmic drumming, and maybe even a not-so-perfect dance-off or two. Let’s rekindle our traditions and create unforgettable memories together. Who knows? We might just eat spaghetti and dance like it’s a guilty pleasure from the 80s!
**Editor**: Thank you, Emmanuel! We’re excited to see this vibrant revival take place and wish you and the Gilles d’Havré team the best of luck in your preparations!
**Emmanuel Daniels**: Thank you! Let’s make it a summer to remember!
