But fans of the C&A chain can breathe easy in Herford. “There are currently no plans to close a branch in Herford,” the company’s press office said. “We are therefore pleased to continue to welcome our customers to our store.” The branches in Kiel, Elmshorn and Rendsburg, on the other hand, are to be closed this year, according to several media reports.
According to its own information, the group has 1,300 branches in 17 European countries. There are 403 shops in Germany. “These are an important part of our sales structure,” said the press office and continued: “Even with the increasing importance of e-commerce, we will continue to hold on to our branch portfolio.” In the past 18 months, C&A has modernized more than 730 stores across Europe. “This puts us on track in our store modernization strategy.” The company does not release any details about this, the employees or the real estate.
There are currently 30 vacancies in Herforder City, according to center manager Ricarda Mohr. “That’s a vacancy rate of eight percent.” All shops within the wall are included. This puts Herford in a good position compared to other cities. According to Mohr, the city has potential. Still, something has to be done. The pedestrian zone is too long, more recreation areas by the river and a mix of branches are needed. A city can no longer survive on trade alone. “Experiences have to be created,” says Mohr.
