Revitalizing Tradition at The Messenger from Brussels: Top Wood-Fired Grills in Walloon Brabant

Taken over, remodeled and revitalized, this historic address, known for decades in Walloon Brabant, is reviving tradition. Top billing: wood-fired grills

A new owner changes your address. Let’s not be afraid to say it, the Messager de Bruxelles, an emblematic brasserie in the heart of Lasne (a short distance from the Ohain golf course), has been in decline for a few years. Sometimes to the point of disappointing those who came to eat there. After the Brasserie du Lac (and its terrace with a mind-blowing view) and the Brasserie de la Patinoire, Thierry Van Damme has set his sights on this sleeping woman he has just awakened.

The recipe is simple. Obviously largely refresh the places both inside and outside where a large terrace isolated from traffic can accommodate up to 80 covers. What is more, retractable, it allows customers to be protected from the vagaries of sometimes capricious weather in Belgium.

The word “brewery” sometimes distills false clichés. Here, chef Adrien Schurgers, also a partner, has made it a point of honor to restore the image of historic dishes from our region. Without revisiting them too much as this somewhat absurd fashion wants.

On the menu, (beautiful) shrimp croquettes (my choice of the day) but also oysters (the Brasserie du Lac is not far away), scampi with garlic or even snails.

The house specialty (they claim it): grilled meats over a wood fire. No question of missing out (even if the chicken and sweetbreads with morels were very tempting, that will be for another time…). Especially since calf’s liver, a dish that I like but which restaurants are turning away from, is on the menu. With a shallot sauce cleverly placed in a separate fondue pot. Add fresh fries (guaranteed!) and homemade mayo, what more might you ask for? For lovers of grilled meats, there is no lack of proposals: pure Irish fillet, Scottish entrecôte which my neighbor at the table delighted in and the famous Tomahawk weighing more than a kilo for two people. Fish lovers are not excluded with two or three meunière or grilled solettes.

A meal washed down with a Minervois 2017 which perfectly accompanied the dishes. From a wine list in which we want to draw.

A Paris-Brest to end in style and we are already making an appointment for a comeback. Because that of this brasserie, which will quickly (re)become a popular place in Walloon Brabant, is amply successful.

A significant advantage in a horeca sector where opening times are sometimes very tight, the Messager de Bruxelles opens its doors seven days a week. If you want to enjoy the terrace in good weather, a tip: book!

I didn’t dumb you down with historical references. But, if this address is located on a roundregarding, it is no coincidence. It was once a stagecoach and, much later, a disco bar that many BW youngsters frequented in the 80s.
