Revitalizing the Golden Globes: Reforms, Diversity, and a New Era of Prestige

The next Golden Globes ceremony will take place on January 7, announced Thursday the organization of these awards, whose image has been tarnished in recent years by accusations of corruption and racism.

The nominations will be “unveiled on Monday, December 11”, added the organizers in a press release.

These film and television awards have long been considered the most prestigious following the Oscars in the United States.

But they have lost their luster since 2021, when the Los Angeles Times revealed the less than stellar behind-the-scenes operation of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which formed their jury.

The daily noted in particular that it had no black member at the time and detailed how voters accepted sumptuous gifts from the studios.

Shunned by the Hollywood elite in 2022 and deprived of television broadcasting, the Golden Globes have since launched several reforms to have more diverse voters and put an end to ethical breaches.

In 2023, the awards returned to television and despite some absences, the number of stars on the red carpet – from Steven Spielberg to Michelle Yeoh to Brad Pitt – suggested that Hollywood was ready to move on. .

The ceremony nevertheless recorded the worst audience in its history, with only 6.3 million viewers.

As part of the reforms, the Golden Globes have been bought out by private investors and the HFPA is to go.

On Thursday, the new organization also announced the formation of a steering committee “responsible for selecting, ratifying and accrediting journalists as voting members” of the Golden Globes jury.

Composed of nine members, this committee “will ensure the application of rigorous standards and practices within the electoral body”, promised the organization.

It includes among its members Tim Gray, a pillar journalist of the influential Variety magazine, named vice-president of the Golden Globes.
