The President of the Regional Council: “An important opportunity to bring the EU closer to citizens and the territory”

Firenze – The 22nd edition of #EURegionsWeek kicked off today in Brussels. This afternoon’s inaugural session opened with the plenary assembly of the European Committee of the Regions which addressed the theme “State of regions and cities in the European Union”. The president of the regional council participated Antonio Mazzeo, member of the Committee since January 2023 where he deals with territorial cohesion policies, the European Union budget and economic policy.

“The European Week of Regions is an important opportunity to bring the European Union closer to citizens and territories, bringing together the different local and regional visions to face global challenges – stated the president Antonio Mazzeo at the end of the session – . Regions and cities are the pillars on which to build a more cohesive and inclusive Europe, in which decisions are made taking into account territorial specificities and ensuring that no one is left behind. Constant dialogue with our citizens and the direct involvement of local communities are therefore fundamental to implementing European policies that respond to people’s needs. We built Europe, now we are building Europeans and our task is to mark the path to follow.”

The plenary opened with the intervention of Vasco Alves CordeiroPresident of the European Committee of the Regions. Roberta MetsolaPresident of the European Parliament, sent a video message. They intervened Younous Omarjeevice president of the European Parliament, Elisa FerreiraCommissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, e Jonida Halilideputy mayor of Tirana. Also intervened remotely Vitali KlitschkoMayor of Kyiv, and Olena Sydorenkomayor of Orzhytsia.
