Revitalizing the Cat Site: A Promising New District in Vilvoorde-Machelen

A new district is about to emerge on the border of Vilvoorde and Machelen, on the outskirts of Brussels. Since the closure of the Renault factory in 1997, the Cat site, located just behind Vilvoorde station, has been in a fallow state. A master plan has just been approved and presented by the authorities to bring this vast 60 hectare site back to life.

The closure of the Renault factory in Vilvoorde was announced 25 years ago

In 2015, the land was acquired by the developer MG Real Estate. On the program now: 2,500 new housing units, offices, two parks, a hospital (AZ Jan Portaels), a VDAB (Flemish Actiris) campus. Residential buildings will be between five and twenty stories high. Social and “affordable” housing is also announced in the total.

Here we go for eight years of construction: 5 things to know about the colossal and very long renovation of the Vilvoorde viaduct

No concrete timetable is yet on the table. The hospital could already open in 2026. But for the rest, we will have to wait longer. The mayor of Vilvoorde, Hans Bonte (Vooruit), speaks of completion of the work within “10, 15 or 20 years”. Many formalities must in fact be carried out before laying the first stones, such as partially modifying the sector plan and remediating part of the site.
