Revitalizing Sports Facilities in Morges: Modernizing Ice Rinks and Swimming Pools

2023-08-30 09:39:59

Aging, expensive and energy-intensive, the major sports facilities in Morges need to be modernised. On the strength of this observation, the Municipality relied on the results of the survey carried out among the population and the clubs to develop a strategy which provides for the cleaning up of the Eaux-Minérales ice rink, the continuation of work to improve the Parc swimming pool and the medium-term construction of an indoor public swimming pool, in synergy with school needs.

The Municipality has undertaken in its Legislative Program to develop a strategy for the indoor swimming pool and the skating rink, in close partnership with the circles concerned. The City carried out a technical feasibility analysis, comparisons with other French-speaking cities, studies of the offer in the region and a survey of the population and sports clubs. The Municipality therefore submits a report to the Municipal Council in order to make an inventory of these infrastructures and present its strategy.

Necessary sanitation

Accepted by the Municipal Council in November 2022, the credit needed for the energy sanitation and the work to improve the Park’s swimming pool has made it possible to begin this first phase of the strategy, which will end in the spring of 2024. This major work will materialize the municipal desire to gradually move away from fossil fuels, while sustaining the operation of this infrastructure built in 1963-1964.

In the same perspective of perpetuating the sports offer for all, the Municipality recently decided to completely clean up the Eaux-Minerales ice rink, while respecting the commitments of its 2035 energy strategy. 30 years will guarantee the practice of ice sports, while providing new sporting opportunities. A call for tenders combining remediation work and financing in public-private partnership will be published during the autumn, with a view to starting the renovation as soon as possible. The operation of the infrastructure will remain 100% in municipal hands.

A medium-term project for an indoor swimming pool

At present, Morges does not have an indoor swimming pool open to the public. However, the practice of swimming is beneficial to health and socialization, and therefore of public interest. The Municipality wishes to build this infrastructure within a reasonable time frame and without excessive costs. Building on synergies, the Municipality has decided to integrate into the future school complex planned on the Prairie-Nord site a project for a new indoor swimming pool open to the public, schools and swimming clubs. In the meantime, routine maintenance work will guarantee the operation of the Petit-Dézaley swimming pool, used by schools and clubs, pending its decommissioning.
