Croatia: These houses only cost 13 cents – and there are hardly any hurdles

To attract new residents, a village in Croatia is selling houses for just a few cents. However, owning your own home comes with some conditions.

For many in Switzerland, the dream of owning their own home remains just that: a dream. Middle-income households can hardly afford to buy their own property anymore. Things look completely different in a village in Croatia. In Legrad in northern Croatia, near the border with Hungary, houses are currently being offered for just 13 cents.

The offer comes from an initiative by the village to attract more residents. Because: The population of Legrad has been falling continuously since the beginning of the 20th century. That’s why the administration has been offering houses at ridiculous prices since 2018.

The houses come with conditions

While the financial resources required should not be a problem, the other conditions attached to the purchase of the house could cause more difficulties. However, the hurdles are not particularly high. Applicants only need to be under 45 years old, in a relationship and have no criminal record.

In order to exclude real estate companies and actually attract local residents, applicants are also not allowed to own any other properties. According to “CNBC”, however, it is not stated whether this only refers to property in Croatia.

Initiative achieves success

The initiative appears to be achieving its goal. Since the program began, there have been more children in the village, so much so that a new daycare center has even been built, reports the Croatian public broadcaster “HRT”.

“A total of five move-in-ready houses have been sold. Three families have already moved in, and what makes us happy is that all three families have had children since moving in. As a result, the number of children in daycare has increased,” Ivan Sabolić, the mayor of Legrad, told HRT.

The initiative is said to have already ensured an increase in children in Legrad.

Widespread practice

The village also provides financial support for the purchase and repair of dilapidated houses. This approach is not unknown. In recent years, several villages in Italy and Ticino have been noticed selling old, empty and sometimes dilapidated houses for 1 euro or franc. In these communities too, the goal was to revitalize the villages.

Houses could also be bought for 1 euro in Sambuca in Sicily.
