Revitalizing Capital One Arena and Its Impact on the D.C. Neighborhood: What You Need to Know

2023-12-17 11:09:34

While Monumental owns Capital One Arena, the city owns the land under it. D.C. officials say they will look for ways to invest in the arena, whether the Capitals and Wizards continue to play there. Capital One might keep college basketball games or become the new home of the Washington Mystics, who play at a smaller arena at D.C.’s Congress Heights neighborhood. Company executives say a downsized arena might attract other events, including family shows like Disney on Ice, graduations and conferences.

It’s unclear how this might affect the surrounding neighborhood, which has already seen a slate of recent restaurant closings. The DowntownDC Business Improvement District said having the Wizards and Capitals downtown helps to bring in $341 million in sales revenue.
