Cartagena de Indias DT and C; June 23, 2023. With a new impulse, the rescue and strengthening of the practices of Ancestral and Traditional Medicine (MAT) for the health benefit of councils and Community Councils in situations of extreme poverty began their march.
The PES-Pedro Romero, from its Health program, articulated with the Cabildo Indígena Zenú de Membrillal – CAIZEM, began the first stage of an agreement to attend to the Afro and indigenous population, through ceremonies of spiritual harmonization, from the thought, the knowledge and autonomy of indigenous peoples; as well as with traditional medicine treatments.
“The expected result with the agreement will be of great impact, because we will make ancestral medicine known in Cartagena as a strategy to strengthen ethnic, Afro and indigenous knowledge. We continue to consolidate ourselves as that alternative medicine from the law of origin, which allows healing in the mental health of young people and adults, in a context of a city that has been marginalized for a long time by this scourge as important as mental health ”, says the ancestral doctor, Leovigildo Castillo.
Within the agreement, progress is made with the characterization and scheduling of 1,000 people from the Afro-descendant and indigenous councils and Community Councils of Bayunca, Pontezuela and Santa Ana, who will be the first to receive the traditional medicine service, thanks to the attention of the doctors. knowledgeable regarding this ethnic group.
“It is good that young people take into account that this ancestral knowledge, which has been lost over time, can save the lives of many people. I have high expectations with the attention sessions that will be held, because much knowledge that was forgotten will be rescued,” said Mary Rodríguez, a member of the Afro-descendant community of Santa Ana.
There will be healing ceremonies
After the scheduling, the days of health promotion and disease prevention will be held, in which the 1000 people will receive comprehensive care in the healing and recovery ceremonies, which include sacred plants, the yonna dance, a healing from song and drum; and other ethnic rituals.
Exchange of experiences and knowledge
It is important to highlight that the current government, together with CAIZEM, have been working on the cultural strengthening of ethnic populations and on the appropriation of the MAT in the territories, as evidenced in the first Regional Meeting of Ancestralities, where the representatives of the indigenous, afro-descendant, palenqueras and peasant communities of the city and the Caribbean region, were integrated into the same scenario to exchange knowledge and insights that allow families in extreme poverty in Cartagena to be healed.
With the practice of Traditional Ancestral Medicine, the government Let’s Save Cartagena Together, from the PES-Pedro Romero, contributes to overcoming extreme poverty, fulfilling a milestone in the city in this area that directly affects the goals of the pillar ” Inclusive Cartagena” outlined in the 2020-2023 Development Plan.
