Rated 4,492 stars out of 5, Gladiator by Ridley Scott is one of the favorite films of AlloCiné spectators. This spectacular peplum worn by Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, and whose sequel is expected in our theaters next December, multiplies moments of bravery and anthology sequences for more than two hours and thirty minutes (2h50 for the long version).
Let us recall the masterful introductory battle of the film between the Roman legions and the Germanic hordes, Maximus’ first fight as a gladiator in the merciless arena of Zucchabar, his bloody confrontation once morest the formidable Tigrix of Gaul on the sands of Colosseum or his final duel once morest Emperor Commodus, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to listing the memorable sequences of Gladiator.
But is there a particular scene that might be designated as the most iconic and successful in Ridley Scott’s film? Difficult to make a choice, the quality being there from the first to the last second of the feature film. But if we had to keep just one, our preference would undoubtedly go to the very first battle of Maximus and his comrades in arms in the Colosseum, shortly following their arrival in Rome.

The Battle of the Colosseum
Located 1 hour and 30 minutes from the long version, this epic scene, masterfully produced, offers the public a masterful spectacle while impeccably underlining the value of its protagonist and the issues at stake.
Seeking to recreate the ancient battle between the barbarians of Carthage and the legionaries of Scipio Africanus, those responsible for the Roman games organized a violent clash between a handful of modest gladiators (including Maximus) and other much better armed, mounted fighters. on tanks, which are supposed to crush them to pieces.
Against all odds, defying his condition as a slave, Roman power and imperial authority, Maximus uses his talents as a military strategist to achieve victory.

Facing Emperor Commodus
But it is only when the fight ends, to the wild applause of the crowd, that the most interesting part of the scene occurs, and that Maximus’ real fight begins. Uncovering his face in front of Commodus, who believes him to have been dead for a long time, the ex-Roman general reveals his identity and announces to his sworn enemy that he has the firm intention of killing him:
“My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander-in-chief of the northern armies, general of the Phoenix legions, faithful servant of the true emperor Marcus Aurelius, father of a murdered son, husband of a murdered woman, and I will have my revenge, in this life or the next.”
Carried both by the interpretation of its excellent actors, by the power of its dialogues and by Hans Zimmer’s epic score, this unforgettable sequence constitutes without the slightest doubt the climax of the entire film.
