[Review]FUJIFILM instax SQUARE SQ40 instant camera with SQUARE photo paper + accurate auto exposure + selfie mode with surprising effects

2023-07-28 06:38:46

I usually take pictures with my family and friends with the instant camera, but the pictures I take have a blurry and dark effect. But recently FUJIFILM’s new instax SQUARE SQ40 claims to have an “automatic exposure” function. Recently, my younger sister Anna actually tried it, so let me explain to you how I feel regarding my first experience with instax SQUARE SQ40!

FUJIFILM instax SQUARE SQ40 will be officially released in early July with a suggested retail price of HK $1,190. As far as Instant Movie is concerned, this price is regarded as the upper-middle price.

▲ The belt can be detachable and adjustable in length, and can be tilted.

In addition to the body, this SQUARE SQ40 also has two built-in CR2 lithium batteries, a detachable flexible long strap, and two instruction manuals. Although it will come with two CR2 lithium batteries, it is not easy to buy this battery.

▲ After installing two batteries and photo paper, the weight is 468 g.

▲ It is also easy to pick up and press the shutter button with one hand.

At first, the editor thought that this SQUARE SQ40 would be heavy. After unpacking, it is lighter than expected following holding it. The net weight is 453 g, and the weight following installing two batteries and photo paper is 468 g. Although they all have a certain weight, it is an acceptable weight if you want to take it out for use. The overall size of the fuselage is 134.2 x 120.2 x 60.5 mm. The editor’s palm is relatively small, but there is no problem in taking pictures with one hand.

appearance

▲ The lychee grain leather case is matched with a silver frame.

In appearance, it is similar to SQ1. However, the SQ40 has a black lychee grain leather case with a silver frame, which gives people a simple retro and professional instant camera. At the same time, it is also a popular model, suitable for both men and women. It has a matte feel to the touch, it will not be very “hands-on”, and it is not easy to scratch.

▲ SQ1 (white on the left), SQ40 (black on the right).

The difference between the SQ40 and the SQ1 is that the shutter button of the SQ1 has a special hand grip, which looks a bit abrupt from the front. However, the shutter button of the SQ40 is integrated with the entire body, visually it will be more consistent as a whole. But in terms of color selection, SQ40 is only available in black for the time being, and there are not as many color options as SQ1.

▲ The camera is easy to operate, and the switch only needs to be twisted left and right.

There are not many buttons on the body of the SQ 40, and the switch button is the same as the SQ1. Just turn the “ON” to the middle to turn on the camera (normal mode), and turn the “OFF” to the middle to turn it off. If you need to turn on the selfie mode, just turn the lens to the end and see the word “selfie mode” in the middle. To take a picture, just press the silver shutter button next to it, the position is right, and you can press the shutter even with one hand. This one does not need to adjust any settings and camera parameters, so it is suitable for beginners of Instant Video.

Going out to test the “automatic exposure function” – there is no overexposure problem as it is said in the market

The camera itself has a built-in automatic exposure function. Point the camera at the subject and press the shutter button, and the camera will instantly and automatically adjust to the best exposure setting that is most suitable for the scene. Since the built-in flash of the camera cannot be turned off, the built-in automatic exposure function cannot be adjusted by itself. So it has been rumored that this camera will overexpose when taking pictures outdoors. So the editor decided to go out and test it with Unwire reporter Salad!

▲The camera has a built-in automatic exposure function, and the flash cannot be turned off.

▲ The waves and clouds in the sea in the photo are clearly visible.

It was followingnoon, and the sun was shining brightly. The editor tried to use normal mode to take a picture of a salad. The instant photos I took were more surprising than expected, the photos were not overexposed, and the colors in the photos were brighter than expected. If you pay attention carefully, the sharpness in the photo is clearer than the traditional instant shooting, without the hazy feeling of the old style. You can clearly see the waves, clouds, etc. in the sea in the photo.

Measured “Selfie mode” – if you don’t want to show your “big head”, it is recommended to use the normal mode

In addition, the built-in selfie mode of the camera has a focal length of 30cm – 50cm, and the distance will be even closer. While normal mode has focal lengths from 50cm to infinity. The editor invited Salad to take selfies in normal mode and selfie mode respectively.

▲ Selfie mode (left), normal mode (right).

It can be seen from the photos that the overall photos in selfie mode will be closer up. On the contrary, the photos taken in normal mode are wider than selfie mode. If you want to take a selfie with multiple friends, it is better to use the normal mode. There is a small selfie mirror next to the camera lens, which is convenient for taking selfies. If you take a selfie with your friend, if it exceeds the mirror image displayed by the selfie mirror, the photo you take may lose half of your friend’s face!

This instax SQUARE SQ40 uses 62x 62mm photo paper, which is just the right size in terms of square. The traditional old-style instant camera uses a rectangular 62 x 46 mm photo paper. If you take a photo with a large group of friends, it will be difficult to see everyone’s appearance. Although the SQ40 cannot be put into a wallet, this size will make the overall look of the photo better.

▲ The photos taken are overall clear.

Indoor measurement

The editor also tested the SQ40 indoors and found some caveats. I took selfies indoors and asked colleagues to help me take pictures, but there was a problem with the pictures I took. That is, although the camera has a built-in automatic exposure function, it automatically adjusts the best exposure setting for the scene as the environment changes. But from the obtained photos, it was found that the flash in the camera was only enough to illuminate the subject, and the background was still dark. If you really use it indoors, you need to pay attention to the fact that the background may be dark and may not be able to be clearly photographed. Or you can try to adjust the indoor lighting to the brightest possible. So the editor thinks that this camera will be better when shooting outdoors than indoors, and it is easier to take beautiful photos.

▲ When shooting indoors, the flash can only illuminate the subject, and the background will be dark.

Although this SQ40 is just an instant camera with selfie mode. A memory card cannot be inserted to store photos digitally. It is also not possible to transfer photos from the smartphone to the camera and print them out. But in terms of the overall effect of the photos taken, it is indeed its biggest advantage.

There have been some editors who have been playing Instant Video, and seeing the photos I took, I was really a little bit excited! But if you have FUJIFILM instax SQUARE series, I don’t think you need to rush to change to SQ 40 immediately. You can continue to look forward to more other products from FUJIFILM instax! If you are a novice, you don’t have FUJIFILM instax SQUARE series at home, you don’t have much requirements for instant camera functions, and you don’t have money budget. Consider this instax SQUARE SQ40!
