Review of the 23rd Edition of Haag Theater Summer: “Ella, Ella” and the Success of “Lysistrata”

The 23rd edition of the Haag theater summer with the comedy “Ella, Ella” is over. On Saturday evening we went to Greece for the last time. The Acropolis in the main square will be history followingwards. In recent weeks, The Hague’s main square has become Athens, where the adaptation of the classic “Lysistrata” in a successful production attracted 7,500 visitors.

The story of the rebellious women who want to persuade their husbands to finally put an end to the war became an explosive topic of discussion. Artistic director Christian Dolezal brought this piece to the stage at the right time and caused amazement, especially with an excellent team, as was repeatedly heard from the visitors. Critics and audiences praised the high-quality production. “I’m exhausted, I’m happy and content. In fact, we have once once more succeeded in bringing a special play to the stage of the Hague Theater Summer. I feel glad that our guests are open to modern theater. I was particularly impressed by the torrent of applause at the premiere and the positive feedback following the performances,” explains Dolezal.

All performances this year were rain-free

Managing Director Gerhard Stubauer draws a very positive business balance and gives a review of the theater summer 2023. “It was an extremely beautiful summer, we were very lucky with the weather, all performances were free of rain. Artistically, the balancing act between summer entertainment and a message that goes to the heart was managed. It’s a piece that fits the current times,” says Stubauer.

The occupancy rate was 87 percent. Last year, 7,463 guests came to “As You Like It” and 8,300 guests to “Der Zerrissene” in 2021. Times like 2018 with “What you want” and 12,000 guests or 2019 with “Measure for Measure” and 10,800 guests are currently unreachable.

If you ask around the cultural organizers, you get a certain mood picture. The declining visitor frequency at cultural events cannot be reduced to one factor. But a serious factor is the current economic development. The reluctance is also a result of a situation of bundled crises: war, climate, energy, inflation. In addition, there is the increasingly dense theater programme.

“I’m happy regarding every visitor,” emphasizes Dolezal, who directs the theater summer with great commitment. “And I feel grateful to be able to work with such a great ensemble.” Then you can look forward to next summer when it says: “The town square is a stage for everyone once more”.
