Review of ‘Petite Maman’ (DVD): Goodbye to childhood

Anton Merikaetxebarria

You can now enjoy on DVD the delicate goodbye to childhood that is ‘Petite Maman’: a beautiful film by French filmmaker Céline Sciamma, whose starting point is the meeting of a girl with her mother, when she was her age. Original plot trigger elegantly filmed by a filmmaker capable of reflecting mother-child relationships in the most fantastic way imaginable. If to all this we add the subtle edges of a timeless fable, the end result might not be more gratifying. Thus, it is easy to admire these two girls, who like to run away, fall and laugh on the earth adorned by their golden smile.

Much of this initiation story takes place in an idyllic landscape, where both girls enjoy their games, on the edge of a lake, in their inflatable boat, surrounded by vegetation that casts silver reflections in the morning light. It is as if we were diving into the blue hour of that milky forest, just at the magical moment when the spell of life began. To the point that, sometimes, we get the perfumes of summer flowers. But also of the always welcoming music of maternal love, when the sun overflows from all corners of the sky, until the moment of saying goodbye. Which is precisely how we live, always saying goodbye.
