Huawei Freebud 5 is today the best earbud type headset that is Bluetooth TWS on the market. That was the conclusion I reached following listening to this True Wireless for regarding a month. If you don’t like using in-ears, this is without a doubt the option with the best performance that can be achieved in totally wireless earbuds with the “plus” of active noise cancellation (ANC or Active Noise Cancelling).
Review do Huawei FreeBuds 5

Coming completely out of the ordinary, Huawei decided to make a headset with a somewhat different design. Its appearance may not please most, but its sound quality has a high chance of winning you over in my opinion. So, don’t be scared by the exotic design of this TWS earbud and check out what it is capable of in terms of sound experience.
Are the FreeBuds 5 comfortable in the ear? Is the build quality good?
Anyone who feels uncomfortable using in-ear headphones, which fit into the ear canal through an “ear tip”, will probably like to use the FreeBuds 5, as it is an earbud and only rests on the ear shells . Although it looks like it’s going to fall off at any moment, its in-ear attachment is fine for an earbud, but don’t try to abruptly tilt your head downwards, as then the phone might actually fall to the floor.

When using the FreeBuds 5 at the office, I didn’t feel any discomfort even using the headset for several hours. In fact, I barely felt that the TWS was on my ears as it feels soft and the body is light. This is a positive point of most earbuds, but the differential here is the more anatomical fit, which keeps it better fitted than other models, such as, for example, the QCY T20 (AilyPods), which try to imitate the Apple AirPods and even they come out better in terms of sound, as I described in your review.

If you intend to do exercises, the FreeBuds 5 is not recommended, as sudden movements will make it unstable in the ears and may cause the headphones to fall out. However, it is important to mention that Huawei’s TWS has IP54 certification, which attests to its resistance to water and dust.
Is the FreeBuds 5 Bluetooth connection stable or broken? What codecs does it support?
According to Huawei, FreeBuds 5 supports Bluetooth codecs LDAC, HWA, AAC and SBC. However, I mightn’t access the LDAC codec even though my phone supports it. Consequently, the codec used by the smartphone turned out to be AAC, which is considerably inferior compared to Sony’s codec in terms of data stream capacity (bitrate). It is worth mentioning that this TWS uses the Bluetooth 5.2 standard for wireless transmission.
Regarding the stability of the connection, I didn’t feel that the FreeBuds 5 connection was very consistent, as from time to time there were glitches that left the audio of the music “choppy”. Perhaps a firmware update will fix this.
Music Playback Controls in FreeBuds 5
The FreeBuds 5 let you control playback via taps on its body, letting you turn the volume up or down by sliding your finger up and down, for example. In addition, it is possible to activate the ANC through a long press while the double press serves to accept a call and pause/play the music. It is interesting to note that playback of the track is paused when removing the earphone from the ear.

Is the FreeBuds 5’s active noise cancellation (ANC) any good?
The quality of the active noise cancellation (ANC) of the FreeBuds 5 is poor, as it is an earbud type headset, there is no good isolation of the sound of the reproduced sound with the environment. This causes interference in the audio capture of the microphones used to carry out active noise cancellation. If you want to understand how ANC works in more depth, access our article on how passive and active noise cancellation works.
Do FreeBuds 5 have good battery life?
By using the AAC codec and leaving ANC off, the FreeBuds 5 is capable of delivering five hours of continuous playback. However, to recharge the headphone battery completely, just leave them for 20 minutes in the case. Its charging case provides an additional 30 hours of playtime.
How is the sound quality of FreeBuds? Is it the best TWS earbud on the market?
If you like bass, understand that earbud-type headphones will not deliver that “thump”. That said, the FreeBuds 5 impresses when it comes to bass considering that it is an earbud, as it manages to reproduce low frequencies with enough weight to make the sound of songs more cohesive. Generally, there is a big drop in the frequency response in the bass region of the earbuds and we get the feeling of “empty”, but in the case of Huawei’s TWS, this does not happen, you “see” that they are there.

Due to the FreeBuds 5’s more coherent bass activity, the midrange sounds fuller, providing excellent performance, especially when dealing with vocals. In addition, another positive point that I noticed in this Huawei TWS headset is the great naturalness of the mids. They sound open, detailed and sweet. Even though the mids are clearly pulled back compared to the bass and highs, I didn’t feel any lack of intimacy in this case.
With regard to the highs, the FreeBuds 5 manages to reproduce them with a good brightness, but depending on the volume, it can be fatiguing. Since it has a “V” sound signature (high bass and highs and low mids), the more you turn up the volume, the more likely you are to end up with ringing in your ears. Personally, I felt like turning up the volume following seeing the bass reproduction capability, but that ended up compromising the tonal balance of the songs.
In terms of spatiality, the FreeBuds 5 impresses and this is expected of it, since it is an earbud and does not have the sealed sound as with in-ears, when fitting them into the ear canal. The sound is very airy, you feel that there is a lot of space between the instruments. This aspect can be impressive depending on the recording of the music being played back.
Conclusion
The Huawei FreeBuds 5 has no direct competition in the R$500 range. official Huawei store on Aliexpress, it is the only TWS Bluetooth earbud that offers extreme sound quality for the format, as well as a secure and comfortable fit. It is certainly an excellent alternative for those looking for a completely wireless headset to use all day at work listening to music and/or podcasts.
