Review and Change Your Energy Supplier Contract: Expert Analysis on Fixed Rates vs. Variable Contracts

It is also a good time for consumers to review the terms of their contract and possibly change supplier. For a few weeks, it has once more been possible to conclude contracts at fixed rates. Is it a good idea ?

Prices have bottomed out now.

In any case, this is the point of view of Damien Ernst, specialist in energy networks at ULiège. It develops: “I believe that prices have bottomed out at the moment. They will probably go up at the end of the summer to reach around 40 euros per kWh in winter. In any case, that is a likely scenario. Several factors combine : the gradual revival of factories shut down last year, the resumption of economic activity in Asia and the risk of strikes on energy infrastructure in Ukraine or Russia. Europe is less dependent on Russia than a year ago, but not completely.”

There will still be time to switch to a fixed contract following the holidays.

Geoffroy Deserranno (Wikipower) roughly share the same analysis. “We are coming to a pivotal period. Regardless of the surprises that the war in Ukraine might hold, prices are likely to fall further in the coming weeks, before rising once more following the summer.” But the Wikipower expert draws a slightly different conclusion for the consumer:For now, the decline continues. I would keep a variable contract until the end of the summer to take advantage of it as long as possible. There will still be time to switch to a fixed contract following the holidays.”
