The National Electricity Company of Senegal (SENELEC) appears to be in robust financial health, as evidenced by a net profit of 49 billion CFA francs, according to the company’s secretary general, Papa Toby Gaye.
However, Mr. Gaye calls for a certain relativization of these benefits, stressing that these funds will be devoted to the electrification of rural areas. Indeed, he recalls that 60% of the population lives in rural areas and does not yet have access to electricity. Therefore, the 49 billion CFA francs will not be used indiscriminately, but rather allocated to finance projects aimed at expanding access to electricity in these regions.

However, consumer associations express their perplexity regarding SENELEC, a company which benefits from public subsidies, generating such a profit at a time when customers are complaining regarding the high cost of electricity. This situation raises questions regarding the transparency and fairness of electricity tariffs, sparking a debate on how Senelec’s profits should be managed to meet the needs and concerns of consumers.
