The assignment ESA/JAXA BepiColombo offered new information on how gases escape from the atmosphere of VenusThe study was published in Natural astronomy.

An investigation led by Lina Hadid from the CNRS revealed leakage of positively charged ionsan unprecedented phenomenon on Venus.

step to BepiColombo in August 2021 by Venus permitting observation and data capture on atmospheric loss.

Previous missions did not explore certain areas, leaving questions. BepiColombo, with its sensors, provided data on these phenomena.

“This result demonstrates the unique results that can arise from measurements made during planetary flybys, where the spacecraft can move through areas that cannot normally be reached by spacecraft in orbit“said Nicolas André, from the Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétagie (IRAP) and head of the SPIDER service.

The results obtained from the spacecraft’s second pass to Venus provide important information to understand the evolution of the planet.

Future missions, such as ESA’s Envision, will provide more knowledge, helps to complete the picture of Venus’ environment.

“The latest results suggests that atmospheric escape from Venus cannot fully explain the loss of its historical water content. “This study is an important step in uncovering the truth regarding the historical evolution of the Venusian atmosphere, and upcoming missions will help fill many gaps,” added Lina Hadid of the CNRS.
