The play “The Imaginary Patient”the swan song of Moliere, leading comedian and representative of French classicism, hosted the Patras International Festival on the evening of Friday, September 6, at the Municipal Summer Theater.
The friends of the theater in Patras watched through satire a merciless hammering of the charlatans and caboyanites who infest the medical profession.
A constant “lashing” at the “experts” of yesterday and today who hide behind pompous phrases and fancy terminology thus trying to camouflage the inadequacy of their knowledge and the fact that they put profit and personal interest above the Hippocratic Oath.
At the same time through Moliere’s writing the audience of the Achaean capital watched an accusatory political commentary and strong criticism against all forms of authority and strong criticism of society and its ills.
Tragically ironically a little after the fourth performance of the play in which he starred, Moliere – ill and betrayed by the doctors – died backstage.
The play was directed and adapted by Emilios Cheilakis and Manolis Dounias. Through the performance, the actors continued their study of the leading French dramatist, who always illuminated the darkness of the human soul through the lens of comedy, understood the human psyche and created characters with a universal reach.
The performance was attended by the president of the DIPETHE of Patras Lydia Karathanasopoulou, municipal and district councilors
