Excerpts from the weekly bulletin of Santé Publique France for Réunion

Viral circulation of COVID-19 was decreasing in S51

The positivity rate (TP) for Covid-19 was decreasing for the first time following 7 weeks of progression. In H51, the TP for Covid-19 was 37% compared to 40% the previous week. This drop affected all age groups except those under 15.

In the emergency room, consultations and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 were also decreasing, with differences between S51 and S50 of 11% and 13%.

Flu

Visits to the emergency room due to influenza-like illness have been stable for six weeks. In W51, 24 visits to the emergency room for reasons of influenza-like illness were recorded compared to 27 in week W50 (Figure 5). Hospitalizations were down with 4 hospitalizations in W51 vs 7 in W50. The share of emergency activity for influenza reasons remained low, representing only 1% of total activity.

Since the start of the flu epidemic, a total of 20 serious cases have been identified by the intensive care units, including 17 adults and 3 children. For adults, the median age was 63 years. The majority of serious cases were represented by women with a M/F sex ratio of 0.18 and 9 out of 10 cases presented at least one comorbidity. Three deaths were reported. From a virological point of view, the majority of serious cases had contracted type A(H3N2) influenza.

Bronchiolitis

Visits to the emergency room for bronchiolitis in children under 2 years old were down moderately in W51 compared to the previous week (Figure 10). In W51, 73 children aged under 2 years were in the emergency room for bronchiolitis versus 77 in W50.

The number of new hospitalizations was stable in W51 with 28 hospitalizations compared to 31 hospitalizations in W50.

The proportion of visits to the emergency room for bronchiolitis among all visits of children under two years old was 17.9% in W51 compared to 17.6% in W50.

Concerning virological monitoring, the RSV positivity rate increased from 13% in W50 to 16% in W51. A majority of RSV type B circulation was noted (Figure 11). If the increase in RSV viral circulation is confirmed in H52, Reunion will probably enter a context of a bronchiolitis epidemic at the start of 2024.
