Reunion Island Faces Flu and Gastroenteritis Epidemics: Stay Informed on the Latest Health Updates

After a lull, Reunion Island is once once more in a situation of epidemic for the flu, with an increase in visits to the emergency room, activity in community medicine and the positivity rate recorded. With the continued increase in visits to emergency rooms for reasons of gastroenteritis, Reunion is also entering the context of a gastroenteritis epidemic. Between September 4 and 10, 2023 (Week 36), the number of visits to the emergency room for influenza-like illness recorded a moderate increase with 25 visits in week 36 compared to 22 visits in week 35. Hospitalizations, however, recorded a drop, with four hospitalizations. once morest six in S 35.

In community medicine, the share of activity for acute respiratory infections was increasing with 6.9% of total activity in
week 36 compared to 5.4% in week 35, remaining above the 2013-2022 average.

People aged under 15 accounted for around 70 of the visits to the emergency room for influenza-like illness in week 36.

– Epidemics of gastro-enteritis –

In week 36, visits to the emergency room for reasons of gastroenteritis continue to increase following the sharp increase observed in week 35

The number of visits to the emergency room for reasons of gastroenteritis for all ages was up moderately by 7% with 119 visits compared to 111 the previous week. The number of hospitalizations was stable with 15 hospitalizations in week 36 vs. 16 the previous week.

Among children under 5 years old, visits to the emergency room for reasons of gastroenteritis were also up slightly with 65 visits, compared to the previous week with 60 visits.

Hospitalizations following passage were stable in week 36 with 10 hospitalizations compared to 11 in week 35

– Cases of bronchiolitis are increasing –

Emergency visits due to bronchiolitis in children under 2 years old were increasing with 28 emergency visits.

The number of new hospitalizations increased sharply in week 36 with 14 hospitalizations versus 6 in week 35.

The share of visits to the emergency room for bronchiolitis among all visits of children under two years old was 9.1% in week 36 compared to 7.7% in week 35

Concerning virological surveillance, a single RSV sample was identified in week 36 as in week 35. Reunion is not in the context of a bronchiolitis epidemic despite a regular but contained increase in health indicators
