Affair of the heart or investment property: The new special model from Zuffenhausen is visually reminiscent of the 1960s and 1970s and combines the turbo engine with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive.
Hardly anyone in this country turns their heads when they see a Porsche 911 – there are too many sports coupés from Zuffenhausen on the Swiss roads for the rear-engine cars to stand out. But there are exceptions. When a roaring 911 GT2 RS makes its way through rush-hour traffic, even the most car-illiterate will notice that this is a more exclusive model. And then every now and then there is a special model from Zuffenhausen that you hardly ever see on the street. Some of them are so popular that they should be bought simply because of their performance. If you can invest that much. And if you get one.
Limited to 1250 pieces
Porsche has now launched such a special model, in retro style, with manual transmission and with massive power. The 911 Sport Classic is the second of a total of four collector’s items from the Heritage Design series and is limited to 1250 copies – so if you want to snag one, you should be quick: the last 911 Sport Classic from 2009 was available in a very short time despite its high price sold out. And the price of the current special model is also high: In Switzerland, the new 911 Sport Classic is available from CHF 338,900.
Visually, the special model revives the style of the 1960s and early 1970s. It has a ducktail rear spoiler, rally stripes on the bonnet and roof and, if desired, a special paint finish in the fashion gray of the early Porsche 356. Inside, there is the iconic Pepita fabric on the center panels of the seats and two-tone leather upholstery in black and cognac. Optical models here are the original 911 from 1964 and the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1972.
The treat under the rear hood, on the other hand, is ultra-modern: it is the 3.7-liter biturbo six-cylinder boxer engine from the current 911 Turbo, which is throttled to 405 kW/550 hp in the special model. In the Sport Classic, however, its power is only directed to the rear wheels, and unlike in the all-wheel drive Turbo, the boxer engine is not combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, but with a manual seven-speed transmission with automatic double-declutching. This makes the Sport Classic currently the most powerful manual 911 model. The active damper control (PASM) from the Turbo and GTS models is used in the sports suspension with a ten millimeter lower ride height.
The new 911 Sport Classic can be ordered now. The buyers are offered an additional treat: Porsche Design has designed a chronograph exclusively for them, which is intended to tie in visually with the new 911 Sport Classic with numerous details. And if the whole thing is a bit too expensive for you, but you don’t want to do without retro chic, you can also have the conventional 911 embellished with selected interior elements of the new Sport Classic as part of the “Classic Heritage Design Package”.
