When leaving, many realize that they have overestimated their pension, reveals a Drees study. And the most modest often regret not having left later to earn more.

When it’s time to retire, it’s often a cold shower. Retirement Insurance may have developed a free simulator on the internet allowing you to calculate your retirement amount, but many French people have no idea of the amount they will receive in their old age. Thus, more than half of people who retired between July 2019 and June 2020 had incorrectly anticipated their pension amount, reveals a study by Drees, published this Thursday.

People who retired between July 2019 and June 2020 say, on average, that they began to seriously think regarding retiring at the age of 58 years and 5 months. That is approximately 3 years and 11 months before their effective departure at the age of 62 years and 5 months. Men anticipate their retirement more than women, who think regarding it with more than a year difference.

Thus, 72% of new retirees declare that they had a precise or approximate idea of the amount of their pension. Among them, almost two thirds (46%) say they received an amount roughly equivalent to what they had anticipated. On the other hand, 20% received an amount lower than their expectations. Only 6% have the happy surprise of receiving a higher amount than expected. “It is therefore a little more than half of new retirees who do not have or who have incorrectly estimated the level of their future pension», Indicates Drees, explaining that this can refer to different factors: level of information received, complexity of the calculation rules in affiliation schemes or other individual particularities.

As a result, some policyholders regret, in hindsight, having left too early: 21% of policyholders declare that with hindsight, they would have preferred to leave later in order to receive a higher pension. And only 5% would have preferred to leave earlier, even if it meant suffering a loss of pension. Regretting not having left later is more common among single people, particularly women (27%) and people with relatively modest pension levels (26%).
