Luis Pereira, secretary of Social Security and Human Development of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (FVM) and retired teacher, assured that they are unaware of the information about the payment of retired teachers that the Ministry of Education seeks to reincorporate into the classrooms.

How much are they going to pay? How are they going to pay? How many hours are they going to give? “How are they going to tell the hours?” he asked in an interview for Radio Fe y Alegría on Wednesday, October 16.

The resolution signed on October 8 by the Minister of Education, Héctor Rodríguez, seeks to address the lack of teachers in various areas such as Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in the public system.

Pereira asserted that the subjects mentioned by the ministry’s resolution are not the only ones that require teaching staff to teach them. Consider that teachers of Spanish, Geography and Biology are also needed.

Lack of information about changes in the educational process

In addition to the lack of details about payment for retirees, Luis Pereira said there is little information about changes in the public education system.

“There have been many changes in the educational process. We retirees have no information about what these changes are. So, that means that retired teachers have to prepare and until now, there is no information,” he noted.

Pereira also stated that retired teachers are not “very happy” with this measure due to the lack of incentives.

“They know that they are not going to charge the same (…) we are still not clear. They are going to give the retired teacher something additional, that is a violation of the Organic Labor Law,” he added.

According to the Center for Documentation and Social Analysis of the Venezuelan Federation of Teachers (Cendas-FVM), the average salary of a teacher per month is about 21 dollars at the official exchange rate.

Unionists do not believe that retired teachers will return to the classrooms

Following the ministry’s announcement, the general secretary of the Teaching Workers Union in Anzoátegui, Edgar Pérez, shared his doubts about the reinstatement of retired teachers.

“He who left in despair due to the situation in the country, for a starvation wage, will not want to return,” he assured Radio Fe y Alegría on October 11.

Pérez considered that retired workers from the educational system are waiting for changes in their working conditions.

“The minister should have had a little delicacy. First, he had to sign the collective agreement that has been waiting for four years so that the workers have sufficient salaries,” he added.
In July 2024, the FVM warned about a considerable number of educators who have dropped out due to the low salaries they receive.
