Moscow: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed allegations by Western nations that Russia may use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, where the war is raging. Dmitry Peskov told the international media that Russia’s military action in Ukraine was not a reason to use nuclear weapons and would only be used if it threatened Russia’s survival.
Russia’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky has said he will not hesitate to use nuclear weapons if NATO provokes it. Peskov’s position came following NATO claimed that it was preparing a defense to protect member states from Russia’s use of nuclear and chemical weapons.
A spokesman for the Kremlin said: “Russia’s internal security policies have been announced. President Vladimir Putin has instructed army chiefs to deploy nuclear weapons in the wake of the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Russia is the second largest nuclear power in the world. Putin’s proposal to set up nuclear weapons was therefore a matter of grave concern.
The U.S. has warned that Russia might use nuclear and chemical weapons if Ukraine does not make progress in the war and tighten sanctions, including in the West. Dmitry Peskov has expressed dissatisfaction with US President Joe Biden’s statement that Putin was a “butcher” who ordered the occupation of Ukraine, which left thousands dead.
Peskov strongly condemned Biden’s statement in Warsaw that Putin should not remain in power. Personal abuse is intolerable. Peskov said sanctions might not isolate Russia.
