retail sales up 3.5% in January and February

Retail sales of consumer goods in China, a major indicator of the country’s consumption strength, rose 3.5% year-on-year in the first two months of 2023, according to data released Wednesday by the Bureau of China. State of statistics (BES).

This growth reverses the downward trend reported over the previous three months.

Retail sales of consumer goods in China reached 7.7 trillion yuan (about 1.12 trillion U.S. dollars) in the past two months, according to the NBS.

In February, the country’s retail sales fell 0.02% month on month.
