Retail sales again marked a drop in April

Retail sales of SMEs in the province of Córdoba ended the month of April with a drop of 3.8% compared to the same month in 2022, according to data collected by the Commercial Federation of Córdoba (Fedecom), and its Chambers and Adhered Shopping Centers.

From this data, 11 months of consecutive year-on-year falls have been accumulated. It is worth remembering that in April 2022, compared to April 2021, sales had already decreased by 1.3%.

“The constant rise in prices continues to be largely responsible for the drop in the purchasing power of families and therefore in the sales of merchants. The providers update the lists, in some cases, more than once a week”, said Ezequiel Cerezo, president of Fedecom.

All this added to the effects of the drought and the poor results of the harvests that have already begun to be felt, above all, in the cities of the interior.

In addition, “macroeconomic instability, the rise in the dollar and the lack of confidence greatly affect daily activity,” Cerezo said.

Decrease item by item

The survey shows in detail the figures recorded by the 11 items considered for the study. The retractions that are demonstrated in the interannual comparison are with respect to the quantities sold.

The negative values thrown in the different items are headed, on the one hand, by food and beverages with 5.9%, and on the other, tires and spare parts with 4.5%. They are followed by sports and recreation items with 4.3% and for hardware, electrical materials and construction materials it was 4.2%.

Among the items with intermediate decreases are household appliances and electronic items that fell by 3.2% in units sold, footwear and leather goods that did so by 3.1%, and pharmacy by 3%.

In the clothing item there was a decrease of 2.8%; 3.9% in toy stores and bookstores, the perfumery and cosmetics category fell by 1.6% and finally furniture and decoration, which registered a fall of 1.1%.

How did the people of Cordoba pay?

The report from the Department of Statistics of the commercial federation also detailed that in terms of payment methods, 47% of transactions were made with credit card and 53% in cash, taking advantage of discounts offered by merchants.
