In the Moto2 class, Somkiat Chantra from Honda Team Asia made the best start to the «CryptoDATA Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich» on Friday morning. Last year’s runner-up lapped the 4.348 km long rollercoaster in 1:34.160 minutes and was therefore not far from the all-time lap record. This is 1:33.933 min and comes from the previous year from Chantra’s teammate Ai Ogura, who won the race in 2022 from pole position.

Behind Chantra were World Championship leader Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) and Filip Salac (Gresini Racing). Lukas Tulovic from the Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP Team finished 25th with a time of 2.096 seconds.

The second practice session in Spielberg began at 2.05 p.m. local time with an outside temperature of 28 degrees and a track temperature of 33 degrees. Silverstone winner Fermin Aldeguer (Boscoscuro) opened the 40-minute session with a 1:36.190 min. After just five minutes, training was red-flagged due to a fall by Manuel Gonzalez (VR46 Master Camp).

The Spaniard’s Kalex had hit the barrier at Turn 4, destroying the airfence, which had to be replaced. Gonzalez was taken to the Medical Center for an evaluation after his fall.

After resuming practice, Ogura set the pace at the front with 1:34.474 min, followed by Acosta (+0.306 sec), Celestino Vietti (+0.507), Alonso López (+0.561), Chantra (+0.683) and Tony Arbolino (+ 0.717). Meanwhile, Sam Lowes (Marc VDS) fell over the front tire at Turn 2, the Brit was unhurt.

Going into the last quarter of an hour of the session, only one rider in the top 8, Ogura, had managed to improve on his time from the morning session. Meanwhile, Tulovic was in 24th place, and the German hadn’t improved his times either.

Acosta heralded the final time attack, setting the fastest time of the weekend at 1:34.050 min and thus taking the lead. The Spaniard didn’t give it up until the end and thus secured the best time of the day. He distanced Ogura (+ 0.314 sec), Jake Dixon (+ 0.324), Arbolino (+ 0.359), Vietti (+ 0.380) and Algeduer (+ 0.764) to the other places.
