Restoring Tranquility: Battling Incivility and Drug Trafficking in Châtelineau

Dirt, threats, broken windows, scratched cars… In Châtelineau, many residents live in fear, even wishing to move. To repress troublemakers, a police order prohibits gatherings of more than four people between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. in ten streets. A measure that aims to restore tranquility and public order in a neighborhood where incivility and drug trafficking have taken precedence for several months.

The decision may seem drastic, but it follows other measures that have proven less conclusive. “Among the measures taken, there is our regular and firm police action. It was agreed last year the placement of cameras which are being deployed. We also have a transversal action with our partners, in particular the municipal administration and the peacekeepers”, explains Philippe Borza, head of the Aiseau-Presles/Châtelet/Farciennes police zone.

The police order is an additional measure that supports police actions. The administrative authority has decided to opt for this legal tool so that the police can carry out targeted actions. From rue de la Fontaine to place Wilson, during the time slot indicated, police officers can now disperse gatherings of more than four people. An action which will be valid for six months, and which may be extended following a reassessment.
