Restoring Security at Gare du Midi: Impact on Homeless and Undocumented Immigrants

At the Gare du Midi in Brussels, it has been almost a month since police interventions began to restore security in the neighborhood. The first to be affected by these actions are the homeless and undocumented immigrants, wandering people to whom we wanted to give a voice. Some deplore what they see as a desire to chase them away. Others find that the presence of the police causes change.

Outside on a bench or inside the station, there were dozens of them that night seeking sleep. In relative calm, especially for women who feel particularly insecure.

“Cleaning” the railway station of all its misery would only transfer the problem elsewhere in the capital, this is the feeling of many homeless people we met. For them, it is support work that must be undertaken above all.

With or without police operations, the number of people wandering in Brussels remains the same: 7,000 people are homeless.
