Restoring Peace: Dealing with Nuisance and Uncivil Behavior in the Stierbecq District

2023-08-08 17:00:00

For two years now, the residents of the Stierbecq district in Tubize can no longer rest easy. The reason ? A group of young people, “unschooled or unemployed”, come to take advantage of the few green spaces located in the heart of the residential area. But it’s not about coming to chat with friends. Too loud music, alcohol, cannabis, car demonstrations, etc., not to mention the innumerable waste resulting from it, the overflows are numerous and take place both during the week and on weekends sometimes until daybreak.

“I called the police more than a hundred times,” confides a resident of Stierbecq. However, apart from a few patrols, quickly spotted via their flashing lights, nothing has yet been done, according to local residents. They also admit to us that they have not filed a complaint since the beginning, apart from the resident who called several dozen times but would have been wandered between the services without ever having been able to formulate her request.

In addition to being annoyed by the nuisances, the Stierbecquois are frightened by these young people with uncivil behavior. Several of them have already been insulted and a resident has already had feedback from a member of the gang: “So what are you going to do?”. To make matters worse, they enter the gardens, “they come home as if they were at home” and several butts of joints were found on the lawn… of the neighboring crèche. The inhabitants of Stierbecq come to “pray for it to snow or rain” for peace.

Residents want to avoid escalation

During our meeting with the various inhabitants, the mines are tired and the spirits heated. Three weeks earlier, the arrest by residents of the gang of young people almost turned into a fight. But the residents want to avoid an escalation and that one day someone ends up injured, on one side or the other.

In order not to come to this, the inhabitants of the district offer various solutions such as the installation of a surveillance camera or the more regular passage of the police forces and the control of the plates of the vehicles.

Contacted many times on the subject, the West Brabant police zone did not wish to answer our questions. An internal person just informed us: “yes, something has been done for the safety of Stierbecq”. Indeed, since our visit, three weeks earlier, things seem to have calmed down in the neighborhood. Rain or shine, residents hope their prayers have been answered.
