A delegation, sent by President Maduro, will be in charge of activating the restoration of the nuclear medicine and radiotherapy service of the Autonomous Service Hospital Universitario de Maracaibo (Sahum).
Health.- Dr. Rossana Vásquez, General Director of Sahum, emphasized the importance of the visit of the Vice Minister of Administration, Technology and Regularization of the Ministry of Popular Power for Health (MPPS), Jesús Brito, this Friday, June 2, who came with the explicit task to recover the full activity of the Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy Service of SAHUM and added “the national government takes a big step in strengthening the National Health System and the Oncology Route in line with the needs of the population,” he said.
Next, the head of the office was accompanied by Dr. Vásquez and by the Zulia State Health Authority, José Miguel Medina, with whom he toured the facilities.
What is Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy
Nuclear medicine is a specialty of medicine, in which radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals (consisting of a carrier drug and a radioactive isotope) are used for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. These radiopharmaceuticals are applied within the human body by various routes (the most widely used is the intravenous route). Once the radiopharmaceutical is inside the body, it is distributed through various organs depending on the type used. Its distribution is detected by a radiation detection device called a gamma camera and stored digitally. The information is then processed by obtaining images of the whole body or the organ under study. These images, unlike most of those obtained in radiology, are functional and molecular images, that is, they show how the organs and tissues explored are working or reveal alterations in them at a molecular level.
Nuclear medicine scans are generally non-invasive and have no adverse effects.
diagnostic use
It is used to diagnose and determine the severity and treatment of one or several diseases, including cancer of various types, cardiac, gastrointestinal, endocrine diseases, neurological disorders; and other abnormalities within the body. Because nuclear medicine procedures can detect molecular activities within the body, they offer the potential to identify diseases in their early stages, as well as patients’ immediate responses to therapeutic interventions.
Radiotherapy
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses x-rays or other high-powered particles to kill cancer cells. The doctor who specializes in giving radiation therapy to treat cancer is called a radiation oncologist. In general, a radiation therapy regimen or schedule consists of a specified number of treatments given over a specified period of time.
Radiation therapy can treat many different types of cancer. It may also be used in combination with other cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and/or surgery.
An average of 70 daily patients will be attended
With the recovery of this important service, the Western Venezuelan Health Giant will offer care to more than 70 patients -affected or suspected of cancer- daily.
The National Executive, through the Ministry of Popular Power for Health (MPPS) together with the Zulia State Single Health Authority, are dedicated to the restoration of the infrastructure, renewal of equipment, selecting the most qualified personnel; and provide all the supplies that are necessary, in order to provide maximum care to all cancer patients in the region.
Strengthening the Oncology Route
The Oncology Route is a public service, implemented by the national government, which begins from the moment the patient is referred from a primary care center -with high suspicion of a neoplasia- to a specialized comprehensive care center of the cancer patient.
The premise that is handled is to cement the inalienable right of free and quality public health as a superior value, especially in the treatment of diseases and pathologies that require prolonged treatments such as cancer.
