Restoration and Conservation Efforts for Gyeongbokgung Palace Graffiti Damage

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 16th that it would conduct an on-site inspection and quickly restore the walls of Gyeongbokgung Palace that were recently damaged by spray graffiti. The Cultural Heritage Administration plans to conduct an on-site inspection of the damage to the fence with cultural heritage conservation experts from the National Institute of Cultural Heritage’s Conservation Science Center and the National Palace Museum this followingnoon. Currently, a temporary screen has been installed on the fence.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it would restore the fence through specialized measures, such as cleaning with preservation chemicals, and strengthen management by installing more CCTVs nearby.

According to the Cultural Heritage Administration, at around 1:50 a.m. on this day, the fence on both sides of Yeongchumun Gate at Gyeongbokgung Palace and the side gate of the National Palace Museum were damaged with graffiti with phrases such as ‘Free Movies’. The size of the graffiti is 3.85 meters long and 2 meters high on the left side of Yeongchumun Gate, and 2.4 meters long and 2 meters high on the right side. The left side of the National Palace Museum’s side door was damaged with graffiti measuring 8.1 meters in length and 2.4 meters in height, and the right side was damaged with graffiti measuring 30 meters in length and approximately 2 meters in height.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a nationally designated cultural heritage site, and the entire damaged wall is also included in the scope of historic site designation. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it will apply the Cultural Heritage Protection Act to acts that damaged the fence and is cooperating with the Jongno Police Station to search for suspects.
