Resto National: Celebrating Belgian National Holiday with Giant Mussels and Fries Dinner in Marolles District of Brussels

The National Ball, which attracted 18,500 people on Thursday evening, gave way to the Resto National on Friday evening, in the Marolles district of Brussels. On the occasion of the Belgian national holiday on July 21, a large “mussels and fries” dinner was held on the Place du Jeu de Balle, bringing together more than 2,000 guests per table of eight.

A typical Belgian menu for the national holiday, to share in a good mood within large tables, this is the principle of the Resto National. Cooks struggled to serve until 8:30 p.m., to each of the guests, a casserole of mussels with a portion of fries – or a “stoemp sausage” for those who do not like seafood – to be enjoyed in a ballroom atmosphere, in the heart of one of the most popular districts of the capital. The Resto National thus served 2,100 “mussels and fries” and 150 “stoemp sausage”, i.e. 2,250 meals in total.

The musical entertainment was provided, from 5:00 p.m., by Funfare and the Mignonettes, the brass band and the majorettes of the Marolles district. These were followed, from 6:15 p.m., by Borokov Kolaktiv, and from 7:15 p.m. by the Rita Orchestra and the Martins. At 8:00 p.m., the giant “Brussels Zingt” karaoke party set the mood until around 10:00 p.m.

Like the National Ball, this giant “mussels and fries” aims to unite Belgians on the occasion of the national holiday which, this year, was marked by the ten years of King Philippe’s reign. The meal was “sold out” long before July 21. It was possible to reserve it for a price of 29 euros and several less fortunate people were able to taste the menu for the price of one euro, with the support of the National Lottery.
