BRUSSELS, July 13, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In response to the publication of the findings of two World Health Organization (WHO) reviews of aspartame, one of the most thoroughly investigated ingredients in the world, published today, the International Association of Sweeteners (ISA) welcomes the reaffirmation of the safety of aspartame by the WHO through its lead scientific body responsible for assessing the safety of food additives, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). These findings are consistent with the findings of over 90 food safety agencies worldwide that have confirmed the safety of aspartame, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)which analyzed aspartame twice, and the american agency Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“JECFA has once once more reaffirmed the safety of aspartame following conducting an exhaustive, comprehensive and scientifically substantiated review”indicated the Secretary General of the ISA, Frances Hunt-Wood. “Aspartame, like all no- and low-calorie sweeteners, when used as part of a balanced diet, offers consumers the choice to reduce their sugar intake, a critical public health goal.”
As part of its exhaustive and comprehensive evaluation reconfirming the safety of aspartame, JECFA reviewed the IARC findings and found no concerns for human health. It is important to note that the IARC is not a competent body on food safety and its 2B classification does not take into account intake levels or the actual risk, which makes an IARC analysis much less comprehensive than the exhaustive analyzes carried out. by food safety bodies such as JECFA and potentially confusing to consumers.
For context, the IARC 2B classification places aspartame in the same category as kimchi and other pickled vegetables. IARC would be the first to say that it does not suggest that people should stop using kimchi or pickles the meals.
As part of a varied and balanced diet and healthy lifestyle, aspartame can be used to further public health objectives of reducing sugar consumption and ultimately help control the weight it’s at diabetesas well as oral health.
