On January 23, Estonia announced it would deport Russian Ambassador in Tallinn in response to Moscow’s previous similar decision to its Ambassador.

Notice of Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs “We adhere to the principle of equality in our relations with Russia.”

According to the ministry, the Russian ambassador will have to leave Tallinn before February 7, the same time that Moscow asks the Estonian ambassador to leave the country.

Before, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia summoned the Estonian Ambassador to announce the decision to expel, and announced the reduction of diplomatic relations with Estonia to the level of Chargé d’affaires.

The move is seen as a response to Estonia’s request earlier this month to reduce the number of diplomatic staff at its embassy in Tallinn from February 1.

This is the first time Moscow expel the ambassador of a member state of the European Union (EU) since the launch of a special military operation in Ukraine.
