Possibility of resolution of the request for reconsideration at the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on the 30th

At the 4th plenary session of the 411th National Assembly (extraordinary session) held at the plenary session of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul on the followingnoon of the 9th, the amendment to the Special Act on the Itaewon Disaster, which aims to uncover the truth regarding the October 29 Itaewon disaster and prevent its recurrence, was held with 177 people in attendance while the People Power Party lawmakers walked out. It is being passed with 177 votes in favor. 2024.1.9 News 1

It has been reported that President Yoon Seok-yeol will exercise his right to reconsider (veto) the ‘Itaewon Disaster Special Act’ (a special law to uncover the truth and prevent recurrence of the October 29 Itaewon disaster and guarantee the rights of victims) on the 30th. If the request for reconsideration of the Itaewon Disaster Special Act is passed at the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Han Deok-soo that day, President Yoon will approve it.

In a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo on the 28th, an official from the Presidential Office said, “The time has come to decide whether to exercise the right to veto the Itaewon Disaster Special Act,” and added, “We are in a situation where the exercise of the right to veto is being weighed.” Previously, this law passed the plenary session of the National Assembly led by opposition parties such as the Democratic Party of Korea on the 9th, and was transferred to the government on the 19th. If the veto is exercised on the 30th, it will return to the National Assembly 21 days following passage in the plenary session of the National Assembly.

The President’s Office previously expressed regret that this law was unilaterally passed without agreement between the ruling and opposition parties immediately following its passage in the plenary session. Afterwards, the ruling party suggested that President Yoon exercise his veto. Even within the President’s Office, there were concerns raised regarding the fact that this law was passed unilaterally by the opposition party, and that it was inappropriate to form a special investigation committee for a matter for which the investigation had been completed.

On the 28th, the Democratic Party of Korea urged President Yoon to accept the Itaewon Disaster Special Act. Spokesperson Park Seong-joon said in a written briefing, “The people will not tolerate the exercise of the right to veto the Itaewon Disaster Special Act,” and “If the people’s demand to find out the truth regarding the disaster in which 159 citizens lost their lives is rejected, the public’s anger will reach the sky.” “He claimed.

Some in the ruling party are also raising concerns regarding the exercise of the veto. There are concerns that if they appear to be rejecting the bill related to the Itaewon disaster, it will have a negative impact on public sentiment in the April general election. Therefore, it is known that the government plans to announce compensation and support measures for the families of the victims of the Itaewon disaster in the near future, regardless of the exercise of the veto.
