Resignation of Minister Giorgio Jackson and Political Tension: Government-Opposition Conflict Deepens

The resignation of the Minister of Social Development, Giorgio Jackson, does not dilute the climate of tension between the Government and the opposition. The former Secretary of State was forced to leave his position following political pressure and accusations of being linked to the Agreements Case, which has already caused the departure of three other authorities.

Jackson stated that his presence was used as an “excuse” by the opposition to hinder the reforms that are necessary for the country. In this sense, the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohacalled for everyone to sit at the table to reach an agreement.

However, the opposition does not look favorably on the reform projects promoted by the Government, especially in matters of pensions and the fiscal pact. The president of the UDI and senator Javier Macayaexpressed through Twitter that the UDI is ready to talk with the Governmentbut for the dialogue to make sense, The Government must substantially change the “bad refoundational projects” that it has supported.

This was also previously supported by the deputies Mauricio Ojeda (REP) and Alvaro Carter (UDI), who admitted that Jackson’s departure allows unblocking the discussions, but that this does not mean that they will approve reforms that carry an ideological weight.

For its part, the ruling party considers that the The Government must take a more active role in the Case of Agreements and remove all those who have any relationship with these foundations. Likewise, he hopes to receive the support of the opposition to advance in the reforms that the country needs.

The political world is waiting for the next move by the Government, waiting for it to take concrete actions to put an end to the conflictive Agreements Case.
